Spring farewell…

The spring is approaching rapidly. With the last remains of the winter we are saying goodbye to the common buzzard which found its way to us with symptoms of poisoning and with the injured wing. It is already next such a case we dealt within this year. It was necessary to the administration of fluids and drugs to him by the bone marrow. This allows an animal to deal much faster with a poison. The bird also had a dislocated right wing, making it significantly prolonged period of rehabilitation is. After 2 months of treatments needed the bird regains full fitness, which makes him able to go. Farewell to the place we chose one of the hills surrounding the city. Quite often you can see buzzards hunting. Released bird probably raised into the air after a while above the white down-covered panorama of the city.

Holidays in Wroclaw…

The “Przemisia” bear visited Wroclaw. After a two-week stay the bear is getting better. Just to remind you, the she bear came to us for the second time after a long chase weighting just over 80kg. Specially arranged syndication diet proved to be effective. “Przemisia” bear successfully regained lost kilograms (20 kilograms) during her January wanderings. Unfortunately our earlier concerns came true. Fed and being in her full strength the bear began to get bored and play pranks :) Bear staying in the hospital has caused us a lot of confusion. In time we mastered the situation. This wasn’t too difficult because the animal was in some degree domesticated and accustomed to being fed by us. However, the facts are that we don’t have the right conditions to keep the bear over a period of rehabilitation and treatment, we decided together with the Regional Environment Directorate to temporary transfer “Przemisia” to one of the zoos until the City of Przemysl deals with the construction of professional range for her. With the help came the zoo of Wroclaw, which has adopted the bear on the basis of 'deposit' (temporary storage), which forms the legal basis for this case. The she bear in a convoy of representatives of the Regional Environment and Fire Department assisted by a vet Andrew Fedaczyński went on the night from Thursday for Friday in the specially adapted cage to the Wroclaw Zoo. “Przemisia” bore the transportation quite well. In the Zoo our bear waits for a new home. We are in constant contact with the city of Przemysl, which maintain that the construction will be finished within three months. The necessary decisions and orders have already been taken. We can only have hope that the bear will come back for us as quickly as possible to live in comfortable conditions. As a Rehabilitation Center of Protected Animals, we have provided access to the website of “Przemisia“ in Wroclaw Zoo where we can look at our bear during her stay. As the Foundation we want to thank for all the support, both financial and in the form of gifts of food. We would like to inform you that all the food for the bear, which still goes to us and some of which “Przemisia” did not manage to eat, has been passed to the zoo of Wroclaw. Also declared financial aid, entirely runs to support the construction of range or bear’s maintenance costs, when she will return to Przemysl. Special thanks for: Elementary School No 1, Elementary School No. 14, Elementary School No. 15, No. 6 Elementary School, High School No. 2 (including a delightful collaboration, and snow bear justifying the City Office;)), the Schools Service and Team-hotel facilities, Electronic and Secondary Schools in Przemysl, as well as all people from Allegro auctions - individuals to whom the fate of wild, Polish fauna is not indifferent. Thank you for your support. This is mainly thanks to you, that “Przemisia” quickly recovered, now feels very well and can expect a decent accommodation.

Bear – the recidivist...

As you may know from previous messages, at the beginning of January in the vicinity of Przemysl astray bear has been noticed. After examination of anesthesia and was released into the wild. Unfortunately this bear, probably in search of food was again spotted in the vicinity of human settlements in the district near the city of Chorzów in Jarosław district. The only solution was to re-anesthesia of the animal. Deliciously sleepy bear was transported back to our center. A Specialist Dr Smetana of the Polish Academy of Sciences notes with regret that the bear, unfortunately cannot cope on its own in the wild. Her behavior points to the domestication of man. This would confirm the hypothesis of a possible escape from captivity. Bear feels well and is going to stay with us for about 3 months. The bear eats daily over 15kg of food. She’s on a specially prepared diet consisting of; carrots, beets, apples, pears, corn, meat, fish and, of course, honey. After several days of observation and feeding the bear in the hospital, we will temporarily move to a specially prepared aviary. We are wondering on her further fate. Zoos refuse adoption of the bear because of too expensive cost of living. One idea is to stop the bear with us permanently, but that would involve the construction of a professional, long dodge which entails considerable costs. We made the effort and do our best in order to collect sufficient funds. The second option, in case we were unable to collect the appropriate sum of money, is putting the bear to one of the professional European Centers abroad. In any case we make necessary contacts associated with foreign centers. Unfortunately, such transport also involves substantial costs. You can help the bear. At this point, the priority is to ensure adequate quantities of food. For this purpose, we put up a special auction on Allegro (Polish auction site). Link below:

For all the support, both financial and in the form of food donations, we warmly thank you. We will inform you about the fate of our Bear.

Bear chase…

In the afternoon a bear roused from a winter nap has been noticed on the suburbs of Przemyśl. The local residents did not believe their eyes. Witnesses immediately alarmed the Police, Fire Brigade and Veterinary Service whose task was to separate the lost bear from human habitat. A decision was taken on temporary leading the little bear into the anesthesia, and then transporting it to our Rehabilitation Centre of Protected Animals in the purpose of assessing his health condition. Hunters were equipped with special anaesthetizing rifle. In the sequence of 10 hours from commencing the action four shots were fired. All accurate, but the bear was so excited that he didn't give up and he didn't submit himself to the effect of the anesthetic. Each time the dose of the medicine has been increased. Accompanying, quickly falling dusk didn't help the action. About 01.00 a.m. after a bear had been tracked down again, we fired the fifth shot which turned out to be effective. The animal fell sound asleep and it was safely transported to us. A bear turned out to be a 3 years old female of brown bear, weighing about 100 kg. After the detailed inspection of the animal we stated no visible injuries. Female bear turned out to be fully healthy, and her condition ascertained no stipulations. At first we suspected that the animal had escaped from the Ukrainian Zoo in Samborze, but then information was denied. After shared consultation with the Regional Management of the Environmental Protection in Rzeszów we stated that there was no need of exposing little bear to the unnecessary stress associated with the temporary stay in the captivity, and then new surrendering it to the anesthesia in order to release it. Dr. Wojciech Smetana from the Polish Academy of Sciences had put the telemetric collar to our bear with a view to monitoring her distant fates, and then she was exported to forests between Bircza and Arłamowo, where she could again enjoy the freedom. This time she could safely stroll a long way from urbanized areas. Amongst many hypotheses and the speculation what attracted female bear to our city, the most probable one state that a bear paid friendly visit of the bear that proudly stands in the shield of Przemyśl.

Swams lake...

Next, healed, young swan returned to its natural environment. The bird stayed with us for about two weeks after he was found on a nearby river frozen to the pane of ice. He wasn’t at best condition. Long-terms of low temperatures significantly weakened the animal. After a period of convalescence, as he fully recovered, we decided that there is no need for his further detention. The swan regained freedom more or less in a place where a month ago, one of his younger companions was released. We know that the entire pond does not freeze in winter, and pursuing, even at temperatures up to -25 degrees Celsius, formed air holes of sufficient size, the birds needed to survive. When we arrived we were greeted by a large flock of wild ducks and two adult representatives of other swans. With a huge curiosity the ducks swim to our charge and watched him, as he tasted the first two weeks swimming in the wild. Other swans greeted our swan warmly. Strutting for a moment they pointed out that our charge stays on joint ground; then they returned to acquiring food. This very enjoyable moment has been accompanied by specific, cold climate, fabulous, winter scenery.
